Let's talk a little bit about rooting and ROMs. I know we have a thread that is essentially a ROM list but no real discussion thread for attempts we've made to root our devices, ROMs we've installed, any problems we've encountered and so on.

for starters I'd love to know what motivates other people to want to root their phones and tablets. I know why I do it. I assume it is the same reason for everyone. Freedom to control our own devices and to get rid of bloatware and other unwanted programs. Who knows though? You might have some specific reason outside that ideal. What made you want to do it? How did you go about it and how successful were you? Did the warranty issues bother you or did you plow ahead balls out?

I recently rooted and made a dual boot out of my father's HP Touchpad. I left the Web OS because no version of ICS I could find could control the camera on the Touchpad. He wanted the full Google Market but didn't want to lost the camera function so now if he wants he can boot into Web OS still to use the camera. Not bad for 99 bucks.

I also rooted my Samsung Epic... twice. I had a hardware problem on the first one and the insurer sent me another. So then I rooted the second one. I now have a gorgeous version of ICS on the phone.

I would love to discuss the process but before I do perhaps a mod could weigh in with what is considered spam on these boards. I used other sites and some excellent youtube vids that walked me through the process but I don't want to start name dropping unless it's cool to do that.

Anyway, what have you rooted? What's your ROM? What's your ROM manager or installer? Talk root to me.

I rooted both my Optimus V and my Galaxy Tab 8.9. I also rooted ly mom's Chinese android tablet and my girlfriends Optimus Slider.

The reason I rooted was because I wanted the latest version of Android mostly.

It also has other advantages.

Better performance

More App support

Ad Blocker

More security (kinda)

Access to features (theming engines, change boot animations)

Above all i like the choice. Do I want to use straight AOSP Android, community changed ROMs, CyanogenMod, MIUI, or AOKP?

Or do i want to build my own ROM? The process isn't too hard if you stick to the guides.

You just so mmuch more out of the device. I don't have to conform to the Apple or Google idea of how my smartphone should be.

You can compile your own ROM and there are guides? Wow, that does sound cool. Any links to where I might find such guides?

I love the Cyanogenmod ROMs. After trying a couple on my first S2 I finally settled on that one. I won't say which others I tried because I don't want it to sound like I'm dissin' them. They were all actually pretty great. I just had to pick one to get to know well and Cyanogenmod was it. Plus the instructional videos for installing it on youtube are excellent so like any piece of software I guess it is only as good as it's support.

I want to try a new ROM for my Transformer tablet. Maybe trying to build one of my own is the way to go.

I just bought my first Android with the intention of rooting it, deleting all of the apps and using it as an embedded controller. It's a Chinese MT6515 and I am completly unable to locate a driver to establish a USB connection to it so this unit will soon become a target at the gun range.

Does anyone have a favorite Android for rooting and programming that I can communicate with using USB and a Windows 7 desktop computer? My profession is controls programming and the Android platform looks like it might be a cool platform.
