Have you Rooted your Phone?

I've been rooting and modding since the Droid X. I have to say the main reason I do it is for the battery life. On the stock OS I was only getting 8-10hrs of use with a moderate to heavy usage. After rooting the phone and flashing a custom OS (Codename Android) I am getting 16-20 hours of heavy use out of the device before I even think about plugging it in. So in my opinion it's well worth rooting your device because you can get a lot more daily milage out of the device.

I am rooted as well.. I did it because when the HTC Evo 4G came out it was supposed to be hard to do. I wanted to see if I could do it with out messing up the phone. :) It worked!

I also use it for the free Wifi Tether.

With Cynogenmod and the Tiamat Kernel I probably gained about an extra 2/3 hours of battery life out of the phone.

Agreed battery is often improved on custom ROMs. Its not as big a deal on my Nexus, but overclocking is another feature which I came to appreciate toward the end of my time using an HTC Incredible. Root also offers the ability to run some specialized applications like you mention as well as the power to remove the crap that comes on the phone. Some particularly good apps that require root are ScreenCast (allows you to record your screen), SetCPU, Tether apps, and a handful of...network manipulation tools...

Although I could really use the extra battery life.. I have to honestly say i dont know the first thing about rooting or even how to do it or where to start.

There was a forum that I was at that really was about the Huawei Ascend (M860) but that forum seems to be changed or gone... so i am left without the info (not looking to hard)

I think I wouldnt mind trying it as I know there were ROMs out there for my phone but they weren't without issue...

even with the Steam app loaded to my phone...it just being Online kills my battery in 4 hours or less and the battery is in Great Health... with it off I can go 2 days easy on light use like just texting

Penetration Testing on your phone FTW!

And Terry not to take away traffic from TA, but head over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/

This site has all your rooting needs. Find your phone and go to town.. But read, read, read..

Old ways to root your phone are still on the site and I have had friends that used old (outdated) methods to root their phones and ended up bricking them.

If you do want to do it let us know. We can help guide you through it.

I rooted because I need tethering capabilities for writing on the go, BUT... I have since fallen in love with all the awesome mods and tweeks you can do to your phone. If you saw how fast my phone can flick through homescreens you'd trip out! Seriously, as fast as your finger can move - no lag. Luckily with the Trinity kernel set to 1350-350MHz with a conservative governor I still get 12+ hours with heavy use. Do all that on a stock GNex!!
