N7100 from China- getting jellybean to work better

I just got my knock off note 2 (no stylus) last week, and it's working fine via wifi (haven't gotten my sim cards yet to see if the phone works). All the apps work great and don't have any problems with it so far. The main thing I need help is weather I should root the phone or if there is a way to re-install the 4.1.1 os it's supposed to come with. It says it has it, but doesn't have gesture typing, or a lot of other of the cool things it's supposed to have. The settings menu is limited. No power save mode, can't make folders on the home screen. I've downloaded swype beta so that takes care of the keyboard, but I really wanted all the bells and whistles it's supposed to come with, or I would've gotten a cheaper version.

I'm new to all this rooting and flashing stuff, so any guidence would be helpful. I'm not really tech-y but would like to learn more. It sounds like rooting and installing custom ROMS is the way to go, but all I really want is the jellybean to work the way it should. Could my kernel be the reason? I heard they can delete some things with a different kernel.

Hopefully someone can help or point me in the right direction.

Thanks for any help.
