Apps not auto downloading with new phone/tablet or factory reset

Recommended Posts

During my days of my original DROID and DROID X, my apps always auto downloaded after a factory reset. Even my Transformer installed all my apps automatically when I first turned it on. At some point this has stopped. I use a number of devices and the only apps that show up in the "my apps" section after first logging into my Gmail account is my paid apps and they aren't auto downloaded either. Is there a setting or something I'm missing here?

In the app market the app itself where you have the option to download/uninstall it there is a check box underneath that says Allow Automatic Updating. You need to check that box.

Now if the dev of the app makes changes to the "permissions" of the app then you will have to manually download it.

What he means is when you first set up your phone. Back in the day once you logged into your account the phone would access purchased and non-purchased apps and automatically put them back onto your phone so that you wouldn't manually have to. There are some custom ROMs Robert that will do this because of code they've turned on but most stock OS devices have this turned off now that we are no longer in the unlimited data age. I believe it is so customers can choose to download apps on their own accord and can't hold the manufacturer, OS or carrier responsible for data overages due to automatic app downloading.

With that said, I think there should be a page in the phone set up process that asks us if we would like all our apps downloaded, with a data usage warning, that gives the user a choice rather than just get rid of it all together.

Jack,

The problem is that it doesn't even show you all your apps that you've downloaded in the past so you can easily find them and manually download them. Now, you have to remember them all and search for them individually then install. The paid ones are pretty much the only ones that show up assigned to my account. It doesn't make any sense.

Yeah that is pretty lame. I remember that on my X and sadly after that even with the automatic downloads in my Incredible 2 were only paid apps. I don't worry anymore because I use Titanium Backup but it's kind of a middle finger move by whomever decided to turn this off.

I've found this to be finicky Rob, but it works for me sometimes. Everything comes back, free and paid for me on my Nexus and Xoom when I wipe and reuse the same ROM. If I change ROMs it doesn't always get the free apps. I've never gotten the free ones back on any of my other devices.
